They shouldn't have killed him, cos then he doesn't suffer it, only his friends/family/assassin mates, and they'll rage much more than being alive (worse). If they dont kill him and cuff him, he will suffer it, and his friends/family/assassin mates will rage much less than dead (better)

And they could have feed him in jails during some years, then stop feeding him hiding it to the population, then his countrymates will quiet their thoughts of the first fact (cuffed) then when he dies it wont be an high shock for them.
