As Gpoint said, a dual core means that there is 2 core. For exemple if a processor is called : Dual core nvidia x33 @3.2GHZ. This means that each of the core got 3.2GHZ of frequence. A quad core is 4 core, for exemple : Nvidia quad core I330 @2.88GHZ. Each of the core got a frequence of 2.88GHZ.
Dual core total power : 6.4GHZ
Quad core total power : 11.52GHZ
Quad core are powerfuller than the dual core and mostly new games now will be using quad core for better performances. (Even if you will still be able to use dual core to play them but then you will have less fps and lower graphics).

A single core CPU (Prosessor) is when you have 1 core to perfrom all your information on your computer. In other words, the brain of your computer.
A Dual Core CPU is when you have 2 cores to perform all your information on your computer. Like 1 part focus mainly on Windows and the other on on your game, to speed up your program (Two brains who work on thair own tasks and co-operate on huge programs/games)
A Quad core CPU is when you have 4 cores, its like twice as fast as a dual core (Not twice as strong), you can run more programs/apps without your computer gets any slower. ( 4 Brains)
